Maize is sometimes perceived as a costly and difficult crop to grow, however, the high feed value and yield potential of a maize crop offers significant rewards for producers. The crop not only fills feed deficits but it also provides an excellent source of low cost starch and fibre in the ration.

In the tables below, we have used a simple calculation and three milk prices to illustrate the diff erence in value between
varieties. The fi gures for ME yield have been taken from the NIAB Descriptive List 2019.

5.3 MJ ME are required to produce 1L milk therefore…
ME yield (MJ/ha) divided by 5.3 multiplied by the milk price (£/L) gives the crop value in £ per ha
