Best Autumn Cereals revealed at Trials Event
By Wynnstay Arable Team 3 months ago

Growers and agronomists from across the UK will be selecting the top-performing cereal varieties to use on-farm this autumn at Wynnstay Woodheads Arable event.

The popular annual event on Thursday, 20th June, at Stockbridge Technology Centre, Selby, in Yorkshire, will help growers to make informed decisions on the best varieties to choose ahead of autumn.

Wynnstay Woodheads specialists, together with expert plant breeders, will guide visitors through trial plots, with the trials by kind courtesy of Bayer, including candidate wheat and barley varieties.

Nigel Britland, Wynnstay Woodheads commercial manager, says the tours will provide an opportunity to see how top cereal varieties are performing in the North, allowing growers to compare performance with their own crops, helping inform decisions on varieties ahead of autumn.

Mr Britland says growers will be particularly interested to find out how new group 4 soft wheats LG Spotlight and LG Skyscraper perform.

Both were candidate varieties in 2018 and LG Skyscraper is the number one choice this year as the out-and-out leader on the Recommended List.

Other varieties of interest include the three G’s – Gravity, Graham and Gleam - along with group 3 wheat KWS Extase, which is receiving a lot of interest from Eastern and Northern growers.

Alongside wheat, there will be a number of spring and winter barley plots, including KWS Gimlet and LG Flynn.

The trial plots also provide an opportunity to see the difference between treated and non-treated varieties, with experts on-hand to offer advice on disease resistance and suitability for various rotations and on-farm situations.

Growers are also invited to bring along soil samples to Wynnstay’s fertiliser stand, for a free moisture-metre test and analysis of the results, along with specialist advice.

The event provides a great chance to discuss with experts the best cereal varieties to suit your rotation, as well as watch demonstrations from leading machinery specialists.

The day will culminate with a tasty fish and chip supper.
